a step in the right direction

For the first time in a long time, I can feel proud of something the US government has done. The bill to repeal the terrible Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy passed, 65-31, in the Senate today! Eight Republicans crossed the aisle to vote for the repeal:
Scott Brown, Massachusetts
Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe, Maine
Lisa Murkowski, Alaska
Mark Kirk, Illinois
John Ensign, Nevada
Richard Burr, North Carolina
George Voinovich, Ohio
I plan to write to each of these Senators, thanking them for their votes. It will take awhile - months, at least - for the repeal to go into effect, but it will happen, and that is something worth celebrating.
